You've been sitting on a board

The foam in your chair gave up years ago. It compressed into a flat pad somewhere around the second year you owned it, and every hour since then there has been nothing between your tailbone and the frame but fabric.

That's why you shift. It isn't restlessness. It's your body hunting for a position that doesn't ache, finding one, and losing it again four minutes later.

The Atlas goes between you and the chair. Contoured memory foam with a channel cut through the back of it, so your tailbone stops carrying your weight. The shape tips your pelvis forward a few degrees, which sounds like nothing and is the entire difference, because that's the angle where your lower back stops working to hold you upright.

Cheaper than the chair you keep almost buying

The ergonomic chair everyone recommends starts around eight hundred dollars, takes a month to arrive, and only helps at the one desk it lives under. The folded-up towel currently doing this job flattens by lunchtime. This costs sixty dollars, goes on whatever you're sitting on, and comes with you when you move rooms.

  The alternatives

Cut out where your tailbone sits

Works on the chair you already own

Keeps its shape past the first month

Moves from desk to dining table to car

Before you ask

Will I be sitting too high for my desk?

You'll gain a couple of inches, which is the honest answer and the one most listings skip. If your chair already sits high relative to your desk, drop the chair height a notch when the Atlas arrives and you'll land back where you started. If your desk is on the tall side, you'll probably like the extra height.

What's the cutout at the back for?

Your tailbone. On a flat seat it takes a share of your weight it was never meant to carry, which is the ache that shows up around hour three. The channel means nothing presses on it at all, so your weight sits on the parts of you built to take it.

How long until it feels normal?

Give it about a week. The first couple of days you'll notice something is there, because something is, and you've spent years adapting to a chair that offered nothing. Most people stop noticing it around day three, then notice immediately the next time they sit somewhere without one.
